15 Things We’ve Learned in 15 years Employers Advantage HR Blog

The Employers Advantage team came together to reflect on 15 years of HR insights, sharing what they’ve learned in human resources, small business, and life throughout their time at Employers Advantage.

  1. Change isn't the issue, communication and surprises are

  2. Culture is built on people, not policies

  3. Never lose sight of your core values. It will get you through the turbulent times and are foundational to decision making

  4. Small businesses need big support. You don’t have to be a Fortune 500 company to deserve strategic, thoughtful HR guidance

  5. This work isn’t meant to be done alone. HR is not an island. No matter your role, we all need a team, a group, a tribe—loyal, trustworthy colleagues to lean on, laugh with, and get through the messy moments together

  6. People, life, business - all unpredictable. We can’t control everything that comes our way, but we can control how we respond

  7. Resilience, composure, adaptability. That’s how to thrive

  8. Things are fixable. Payroll, personnel issues, benefit hiccups. Obviously insert a million disclaimers, but overall, take a deep breath because "we can fix that"

  9. Feelings aren't facts. They may have validity and warrant attention, but they are not the same as concrete, actionable facts

  10. Not every leader is a people leader- we have to grow them into the role or manage the consequences if we don't

  11. You won't make everyone happy and technically you aren't supposed to. Fairness doesn't always feel good

  12. HR consulting has evolved from consultative to HR thought partner; it’s shifted the conversation and mindset for business owners to consider HR’s seat at the table as a true partner (not just managing employees) but in all aspects of business deployment

  13. Trust builds strong partnerships. Our best client, employee, referral partner, vendor relationships are built on trust, transparency, and teamwork

  14. Kindness is good business. We’ve seen it time and again: when leaders treat people with empathy and respect, the whole business thrives

  15. We’re just getting started. After 15 years, we’re still learning, growing, and excited about what’s ahead
